The Blackvue DR500GW-HD dash cam comes complete with a brand-new wifi feature. The camera records in full HD at a high frame rate with a built-in microphone and numerous recording modes such as motion detection. The video files save in .mpg format, and the camera holds memory cards with up to 32GB of storage. The dash cam also includes GPS and voice notifications.
This camera has fantastic video quality, and it maintains this quality under various circumstances such as weather, angle and lighting.
The design is a bit bigger than previous models, but it is still sleek, light and easily fits in your hand and within your vehicle.
Most notably, this dash cam is the first of its kind to have wifi capabilities. You can connect wirelessly to your dash cam and check footage or change settings from your phone, tablet or PC. The BlackVue DR500GW-HD camera also includes a free BlackVue app and software for easy and user-friendly connectivity and control.
One of the biggest questions with this dash cam was whether it had the same overheating problems that previous models had. The good news is that the DR500GW-HD does seem to have resolved this serious issue. There have been no known reports of overheating from this particular dash cam.
Despite the camera having good picture quality, this can easily be ruined by the pixelation that occurs due to the low bit rate.
There have been reports of a virus within the included SD card. While it can be assumed that the problem has been resolved by now, there has been no confirmation. Additionally, there’s no telling which SD cards are infected and which are not. Users are warned to scan the SD card before using it in their computers.
This camera is heavier and bulkier than previous versions. Additionally, its range of movement has not improved over its predecessors.
The wifi range is limited, and some people have had problems using the app and software for the camera.
Despite being slightly dated as of this writing, the BlackVue DR500GW-HD is still a great dash cam. It has a slightly high price tag, but it’s still a very reliable, high quality, versatile and easy to use camera that would be a welcome addition to any vehicle.
