Mini 0826 Dash Cam Review

The Mini 0826 dashboard camera is the latest in the successful Mini 08XX series and a successor to the Mini 0806 dashcam.

It contains an Ambarella A7LA50 chipset that is capable of recording videos up to 1296p (30fps) resolution.

While the list of features appears the same between the two models, the Mini 0826 has improved the quality of build and successfully resolved various bugs that plagued the Mini 0806.

The Mini 0826 features a 1.5″ TFT screen, a 3.2 MP Omnivision OV4689 CMOS sensor, and a 135 deg diagonal viewing angle that captures additional imagery on the left and right edges of the screen.

The image format is .JPG, the video format is .MOV, and interfaces are HDMI, USB and AV. The dashcam’s ultra-mini form factor, although 1 cm longer than its Mini 0806 predecessor’s, makes it just as discreet when mounted.

An optional GPS is stored inside the mounting bracket that attaches to the windscreen.

A G-sensor is built-in, motion detection and both Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) are supported.

Loop recording overwrites the earliest recordings when memory storage is full. However, G-Sensor kicks in when the car experiences an impact, emergency braking, or tilting, and prevents those recordings from being overwritten by the loop-recording.

Pros

The soft rubberized surface and sturdy casing contribute to the impression of a high-quality item.

Video image quality and color are excellent in daytime recordings with license plates, signs and image details bright and clear.

Super Night Vision HDR sharpens low light recordings due to high dynamic range at a 1080p resolution or below, and glare from street lights is reduced with an optional circular polarizing lens filter (CPL).

Using the maximum supported 64GB of SD storage, the Mini 0826 can store an impressive 24 hours of 1080p recording footage at 45 fps. The high resolution video recording options are 2560x1080p (30 fps), 2304x1296p (30 fps), 1920×1080 (45 fps) and 1280x720p (60 fps).

Cons

The maximum SD memory size is 64GB, less than the 256GB (2x128GB) and 128GB sizes supported by the Mini 0806 and 0805, respectively.

The operating temperature range is 0-deg C to 40-deg C (32-deg F to 104-deg F) so the performance can suffer in extreme summer temperatures as seen over the Mini 08XX line.

Overall Mini 0826 Review

The Mini 0826 is a higher quality version of the Mini 0806 with highly desirable features and production bugs worked out.

Its larger form factor is intended for a future capacitor version which would improve performance in extreme weather when it is released. The Mini 0826 is currently priced lower than the Mini 0806, so if you can live with the lower memory and are not plagued by extreme temperatures, it could be an excellent choice for your dashcam needs.
